How RecordLog works — recording, formats, noise reduction, dual-mono mics, Boom Mic, library, trim, export, transcription, cloud archive, purchase, and privacy. iOS 17+, iPhone.
What RecordLog is
RecordLog is a voice recorder for your iPhone. Use it for lectures, interviews, meetings, personal notes, and quick music ideas.
It is built on four promises:
- It records reliably.
- It never loses your audio.
- You can take your audio anywhere.
- There is no subscription.
RecordLog is a free download with a 7-day trial where everything works. There is no account, no advertising, and no paywall on recordings you already made. After the trial, everything you already have keeps working. A single one-time purchase only unlocks making new things (see Purchase & unlock).
RecordLog is local-first. Recording and noise reduction always happen on your phone. The internet is only used for things you start yourself: a cloud folder you choose for backup copies, a transcription job you approve, and normal iCloud device backup. Everything important works offline.
What's included
- One-tap recording — record, pause, resume, and stop from the main screen, with elapsed time, a level meter, and a clear Recording or Paused label. A transport lock disables pause and stop during a recording so an accidental touch can't end it.
- No time limit — a recording can run as long as your storage allows. The app shows how much time you have left.
- Keeps recording in the background — capture continues when the screen locks or you switch apps.
- Survives interruptions — if a call, Siri, or an unplugged mic stops the recording, what you captured is saved safely. Tap Continue Recording to keep going in a linked
Part 2. To keep everything in one unbroken file, turn on Do Not Disturb before you press record: silenced calls go to voicemail without touching the recording. (If a call does ring through, the finished part is already saved — declining the call can't undo the split.) - Transport lock — lock the pause and stop buttons during a long recording so a bump in your pocket can't end it.
- Nine recording presets — ready-made quality settings across four audio formats (AAC, ALAC, FLAC, and PCM), each showing how much storage it uses. Details: Formats & Codecs.
- Noise Reduction — cleans up background noise while you record spoken voice. Details: Noise Reduction.
- Dual Mono — record two separate mics into one file without mixing them together. Made for interviews with two lapel mics. Details: Dual Mono Mics.
- Boom Mic — turn your phone and a Bluetooth speaker into a small-room announcement system, with an optional recording. Details: Boom Mic.
- Six playback speeds — 0.5×, 0.75×, 1×, 1.25×, 1.5×, 2×. The app remembers your choice.
- Library — folders, rename, favorites, search, sort, and selecting several recordings at once. Each entry shows its date, length, format, size, folder, and whether it has a transcript.
- Trim the ends — cut dead air off the start or end of a recording. You are asked after each recording (on by default), or you can trim later.
- Export — send the original audio, a WAV copy, a Broadcast WAV with embedded timecode, separate files for each mic, editing information, transcript files, or a list of recordings through the normal iPhone share sheet.
- Transcription — turn English speech into text using Apple's speech recognition. You start it yourself for one recording at a time.
- Cloud archive and import — automatically keep a backup copy in a folder you pick (iCloud Drive, OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox), and bring copies back later.
- Recently Deleted — deleted recordings can be recovered for 30 days.
- Remove from iPhone — free up space on your phone while keeping your backup copy.
- Diagnostics — an optional support report you send yourself. It describes how the app is working but never includes your audio.
Requirements and limits
- Needs: iOS 17.0 or later.
- Devices: iPhone in portrait. iPad and Apple Watch are not supported in version 1.
- Offline: recording, noise reduction, library, playback, trim, and normal export all work with no internet.
- What RecordLog is not: not a full studio editing app — no mixing board, effects, or mastering. Not a live transcription, translation, summary, or "who spoke" tool. Not a secret recorder. Not a collaboration service with accounts. And not legal advice about whether recording is allowed where you are.
Accessibility
- VoiceOver announces the recording state and time in steady updates rather than a flood of changing numbers. The waveform is decorative and skipped.
- Text size scales up to the largest iPhone text settings.
- Recording, lock, and trim status are shown with both an icon and words — never color alone.
- Buttons meet Apple's recommended minimum tap size, including the lock and the big record button.
- Reduce Motion is respected.
Where to go next
The table of contents on the left walks through the app section by section. Getting started is the best first stop. The FAQ and Troubleshooting pages cover the common questions, and Support is one tap away.
